COMPOSITION for STONE INSTRUMENT (LITHOPHONE / SOUNDING STONE)
This is a piece that developed without preconceptions out of an almost jazz-composition-like process. It began with a few basic features on three faces of the stone that had seemed suggested by its initial rough state. These features were then brought together with the careful addition of linking elements. Some of these elements resemble those of musical instruments, while others evoke the passage of sound-producing air.
There are finger holes, thin bands of stone that appear capable of vibration, as well as the suggestion of a reed mouthpiece. There are swirling passages to channel air both through and against sound plates, as well as a valve lever and even a fiddlehead. Taken as a whole, the piece suggests a treble clef.
This piece was carved in a studio filled at the time with the music of Miles Davis and J.S.Bach
